Christmas Markets
In Italy, the tradition of Christmas Markets dates from way back and, in
particular, has its roots in Northern Italy; these markets are to be found
here, starting from the last week of November, along the length of the whole
of the Alpine range. To choose from there are numerous articles for the home
and for decorating the tree, artisan products as well as toys, clothing and
gastronomy. This is a marvellous occasion for visiting places decked out with
lights and decorations, creating a magically dreamlike atmosphere. The largest
and most important are without doubt those at Bolzano,
Bressanone,
Brunico,
Merano and
Levico Terme, not forgetting the very old Christmas Market in
Naples,
with the traditional exhibition of the Christmas Cribs ('Presepi').
The markets at Livigno and Bormio also have their importance, as well as those
of the large cities such as
Aosta,
Trento,
Milan,
Verona,
Venice,
Genua,
Rome e
Florence.
