Built for military purposes by the Florentines in the 13th century. Within its walls and gate fortified by towers some fine medieval and Renaissance houses stand on alleyways which intersect at right angles.
Recent restorations at Soffena Abbey, a short distance beyond the walls, have renewed all its medieval charm.
